Abstract A 1997 study examined the feasibility of using a computer assisted self completion interview (CASI) for a general population survey of sexual lifestyles. A split run experiment comparing CASI with paper self completion methods examined: the effect of CASI on response rates; how respondents cope with CASI; whether data quality was better in CASI; and whether CASI would affect reports of sensitive behaviour. CASI was found to have no effect on response rates or on interview length, and to result in much higher quality data, both in terms of more consistent data and lower item non-response. No significant differences were found in overall rates of reporting sensitive behaviours (e.g., homosexual experience).
